about

You are eavesdropping on an informal performance in front of a small
audience in a time-worn and beautiful 11th Century chapel. The
resonant nave sung as the odd train rumbled low through the old
branch-line junction nearby. The new album ‘Straight to Hell (Thanks a
Bunch) album makes use of the fantastic acoustics of the space and the mood created by the quietly present audience to capture an atmosphere unavailable in a recording studio: a blues field recording with a medieval twang!

Delta Tom played old blues and religious songs in amongst his own
fiery and humorous songs and mesmerising instrumentals; showcasing powerful vocals and his mastery of fingerpicking blues styles from piedmont picking style to shimmering slide guitar.

Straight To Hell (Thanks a Bunch) is stunningly illustrated in a 6 panel digi-pack by award-winning illustrator Beatriz Lostalé.

‘Blues Matters’ Review by Andy Snipper Aug 2020 (Issue 115)

Delta Tom is Tom Colborn, a skilled acoustic guitarist and Blues singer with a sharp sense of humour and a natty taste in hats. The album combines a number of originals some excellent acoustic instrumentals and a fine version of the classic St James Infirmary Blues. The main focus though is on his self-penned numbers which shows off his sharp wit with great aplomb. The album opens with Gravitation, a musing on the habit of things to refuse to stay where you put them. His voice is strong but with a hard edge, but it is his guitar playing which really stands out, his picking and harmonics are sweet and beautiful. The title track sees Delta Tom bemoaning his inability to achieve high status and riches as a Bluesman, the lyrics show his acerbic writing style, but the track does put a big smile on your face. Bye and Bye shows a more traditional side to Delta Tom with the feel of an old church holler number and, again, sublime guitar playing. There are many different sides to Delta Tom, the humorist, the traditionalist and the serious musician as well as the more jokey but the bottom line is that this is an album that puts smile on your face, and unlike many albums with humour in the lyrics, actually bears repeat listening. I found myself picking out certain track at different times, simply for the enjoyment of the music. Well worth checking out.
